A woman was trying to retrieve her cellphone that had fallen into the hole of an outhouse toilet in a Washington state national forest when she fell in headfirst and had to be rescued by firefighters.
Brinnon Fire Department Chief Tim Manly said the woman had disassembled the toilet seat and used dog leashes to try to retrieve the phone, even using the leashes to tie herself off as she reached for the phone.
“They didn’t work very well, and in she went,” Manly told the Kitsap Sun.
Manly said the woman unsuccessfully tried to escape for 10-15 minutes. Having been reunited with her phone, she called 911 for help, and the Brinnon Fire Department and Quilcene Fire Rescue responded.

The emergency responders passed her blocks to stand on before she was able to reach a harness and be pulled out of the outhouse’s vault. Manly said the woman was not injured and did not request medical transport to a hospital.

“I imagine that she was probably very fortunate,” Manly said, noting that his department helped to wash her down and “strongly encouraged [her] to seek medical attention after being exposed to human waste, but she only wanted to leave.”
“I don’t have any experience with that kind of a rescue, except for now,” Manly added. “But I know that is not a good place to be.”
