Tracking poll: Clinton, Trump contest is ‘closest it’s ever been’

Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by 2 percentage points, 47-45, in a hypothetical general election matchup, according to a weekly tracking poll released on Wednesday night.

The SurveyMonkey Election Tracking poll found the race between the Democratic and Republican front-runners is the “closest it’s ever been,” but the biggest change over the past week is the increase in the number of people who believe Trump can win in November.

About 46 percent of respondents say they think Trump can win, compared to 47 percent of those surveyed who say the same about Clinton. Last week, Clinton had a 9-point advantage on this question.

The survey also polled the favorability ratings of the candidates’ spouses, and found the country is divided about both Melania Trump and former President Bill Clinton. Melania Trump’s favorability rating is underwater, as 46 percent of respondents view her favorably and 47 percent view her unfavorably. Bill Clinton’s favorability poll number is 1 percentage point higher than his unfavorable number, 50-49. Both candidates were viewed more favorably than their spouses.

The SurveyMonkey Election Tracking survey polled 12,969 registered voters online from May 23-29. Since the survey is based upon the participation of those who self-selected as opposed to a probability sample, there is no estimate of sampling error, according to SurveyMonkey. The poll does have a “bootstrap confidence interval” of 1 percentage point.
