Florida Avenue: Party on

Back in April, the Washington Examiner reported that publicans and restaurateurs in and around Florida Avenue and U Street NW were running up against the city’s zoning laws.

A law designed to protect the area’s arts scene put a cap on the amount of bars and restaurants in the area. Neighbors and advocates lobbied to double the cap, saying it was stifling the night life in the area.

DCist is now reporting that the pro-party people have won: The Zoning Commission has granted the application.

There were, as usual, some concerns that the neighborhood was in danger of becoming (gasp) “another Adams Morgan.” For many Washingtonians, Adams Morgan is the Vatican of sweaty frat boys.

DCist author Kriston Capps is having none of that, saying that “one reason Adams Morgan became Adams Morgan is the difficulty entrepreneurs found … opening bars and restaurants elsewhere.”
