A woman reported to be the oldest person in Virginia has died.
Maggie Margaret Montague James, of Caroline County, died Friday at the age of 112. She was born March 10, 1900, according to The Free Lance-Star.
James’ granddaughter, Vernessa Ware, told The Free Lance-Star that James’ longevitiy could be attributed to a diet she had followed for decades. In the 1930s, a doctor told James — who was suffering from high blood-pressure — to not eat pork and to have very little salt.
A gerontology expert told the newspaper that as of May 27, James was the oldest person in Virginia, the 12th oldest person in the United States and the 30th oldest person in the world
James’ funeral is scheduled for Saturday in Woodford, Va.
