1 student injured in Florida high school shooting, authorities say

One student was injured Friday in a shooting at a high school in Ocala, Florida.

A suspect is in custody, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said during a press conference on the shooting, and authorities have asked residents to avoid areas near Forest High School.

A 17-year-old male student was shot in the ankle, and the wound is not considered life threatening, Marion Public Schools spokesman Kevin Christian said.

Sheriff Billy Woods told reporters that the response time to the shooting was three minutes and the suspect showed no resistance as he was taken into custody.

All public schools in Marion County have been placed on lockdown.

Forest High School students were bussed to First Baptist Church of Ocala to meet up with their parents.

The shooting comes on the day of a National School Walkout against gun violence.
