The number of shootings so far in Chicago are up from the same time in 2016.
Over the weekend, four people were killed and 23 others were wounded in shootings in the Chicago area, according to reports.
Two people were shot in separate incidents before noon Monday. The shootings bring the total victims number to 297 this year.
Two weekends ago, eight people were shot to death and 24 others were wounded. According to the Chicago Tribune, January homicides are up 24 percent compared to last year.
One of those non-fatally shot was an off-duty Cook County sheriff’s courts deputy. He was among three people wounded when gunfire erupted outside a bar in the Gold Coast neighborhood where he was working security while off-duty.
Gun violence has put Chicago in forefront of the news week after week. Recently, President Trump vowed federal intervention to the city if it can’t reduce the “carnage” of gun violence.
Earlier this month, the Chicago Police Department said that 2016 saw an “unacceptable rise in violence” — which includes 762 murders, 3,550 shooting incidents and 4,331 shooting victims.
