Five police officers and one woman were hospitalized following a shooting at a standoff Friday morning in Phoenix, Arizona, according to local police.
A total of eight police officers were shot, though three did not need hospitalization, according to the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association. One of the officers and the woman were critically injured, but officials offered no additional information on the status of the officers and the woman.
Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said officers were called at roughly 2 a.m. to the scene, where one police officer was shot as officers approached his home. Williams did not say what the role of the woman was or how she was tied to the standoff.

Officers were lulled closer to the home after a baby in a carrier was placed outside of the house, Williams said. Four additional officers were shot when they attempted to move the baby away from the house, he continued. The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home as officers began firing back, she said.
The baby was uninjured, Williams said.
“If I seem upset, I am. This is senseless. It doesn’t need to happen, and it continues to happen over and over again,” Williams said, according to Fox News. “But I am thankful that our four officers are recovering and one of them is seriously hurt but is on the road to recovery.”
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey asked for prayers for those who were shot.
“Our men and women in blue work day and night — no matter the circumstances — to protect our state from danger,” Ducey said in a statement Friday. “Their unwavering courage & sacrifice helps to keep us safe. Arizona is deeply grateful.”
