President Trump said he probably deserved the late Barbara Bush’s criticism because “look what I did to her sons.”
“I have heard that she was nasty to me, but she should be. Look what I did to her sons,” he told the Washington Times on Thursday.
A new book, The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty, details the former first lady’s negative take on Trump.
She blamed him for exacerbating her heart problems and said she would “probably say no” when asked if she still considered herself a Republican. Bush also had a clock ticking down until the end of Trump’s term.
Trump engaged in a bitter primary with Bush’s son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, during the 2016 election. Trump also frequently attacked President George W. Bush while campaigning for the White House.
Bush died April 17, 2018, at the age of 92, just months before her husband, President George H.W. Bush, who died in December.
