Creativity and a diverse selection of writing paid off for one Anne Arundel high school?s literary magazine.
Annapolis High School?s 2007 edition of Perception recently received several awards for its content and edgy design.
“It?s a good opportunity for students to get published who otherwise wouldn?t have that opportunity,” said senior Emily Gershon, 17, who is the daughter of last year?s faculty adviser, Leslie Gershon.
The magazine is run by students, who handle all responsibilities from writing to editing to design.
Last year, 17 students were involved on the magazine staff and between 40 and 45 students submitted their work. The students meet monthly after school, said Leslie Gershon.
The majority of the writing in the 72-page 2007 edition is poetry, but several submissions included prose, paintings, drawings and photography, said Gershon, who was replaced this year by current adviser Mae Johnson.
Emily was the only student to win a certificate from the American Scholastic Association for her short story “I Remember Her Laugh.” Her personal story focuses on her friendship with her friend?s mother as she coped, and eventually died, of breast cancer.
Emily said her mother surprised her by submitting her story for the competition.
“It was totally unexpected,” she said.
