Annapolis prepares for coastal storm

Annapolis survived Thursday afternoon’s high tide, but officials are eyeing another high tide early Friday morning as a coastal storm makes its way to Maryland.

“If we going to get any flooding, it will be overnight,” said Ray Weaver, City of Annapolis spokesman, who added that Thursday’s high tide was about five inches from the lowest point of the City Dock.

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory for Anne Arundel and the Middle River and the Potomac River areas until Friday morning, expecting water levels to rise one to two feet above normal.

High tide at the Naval Academy will occur at 3:29 a.m. Friday, according to the NWS Web site.

City officials are putting a second load of sandbags Thursday afternoon for businesses and homes along the City Dock to prepare for the storm, which is expected to arrive late tonight. The first truck arrived Wednesday.

NWS is predicting the rain to come at one-quarter inch an hour overnight.

Annapolis was hard hit by Tropical Storm Isabel, which flooded parts of the dock and the academy. Since then, the academy has shored up its flooding defenses along the Severn River.

A wind advisory is in effect for central and southern Maryland, with winds possibly reaching 45 miles per hour. A gale warning is up for the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River tidal area.
