Hollywood celebrities struggle to cope with end of Sanders campaign

Celebrities across the entertainment spectrum took to Twitter to express despair over the news that independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders had suspended his presidential campaign.

“Today I am suspending my campaign,” Sanders tweeted with a video message earlier this week. “But while the campaign ends, the struggle for justice continues on.”

“I feel so hopeless and devastated and powerless,” model and actress Emily Ratajkowski tweeted with the hashtag, “#BernieIsOurHope.”

“In all this darkness, he made me believe that people, together, could be the light,” comedian Sarah Silverman wrote. “He continues to be an inspiration. And he’ll never stop fighting for us. Thank you, Bernie. For me, you’re right up there w Mr. Rogers.”

“So Wall Street big pharma insurance cartels – won again – Consolidating their awesome power to derail a working people’s movement,” actor John Cusack tweeted, adding that “the fight continues.”

“Bernie will always be the man,” rapper Kid Cudi tweeted.

“Thank you for fighting for everyone Senator Sanders @BernieSanders To all of his supporters, thank you for caring & fighting and I know how hard this day is for you. I hope we can all come together & defeat Trump,” hairdresser and TV personality Jonathan Van Ness wrote.

Other less famous Sanders supporters went viral expressing their frustration with videos on social media platforms such as Twitter and TikTok.

Sanders’s departure from his second consecutive presidential race means that former Vice President Joe Biden is the presumptive nominee to square off against Trump in November.

Biden called on Sanders supporters to join him and create a unified Democratic Party.

“Bernie has an incredible following,” Biden said this week. “He’s maybe one of a half-dozen people in American history who may not be the nominee but has had an impact on American politics in a significant way, in a positive way.”

“If I’m the nominee, I can tell you one thing — I would very much want Bernie Sanders to be part of the journey. Not as a vice presidential nominee, but just in engaging in all the things that he’s worked so hard to do, many of which I agree with.”
