GOP postpones retreat amid shutdown

House Republicans have postponed their annual retreat as the partial government shutdown drags into its second month.

Republicans had scheduled their retreat Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., informed members of the postponement Wednesday morning.

The Congressional Institute, which hosts the annual retreat, indicated that the event would be rescheduled once the shutdown ends.

“Since the government is shut down, we and Republican Leadership agree that Members of Congress should be in Washington, DC, negotiating a path that gets our federal workforce back on the job,” Congressional Institute President Mark Strand said in a statement.

“We look forward to rescheduling this important conference later in the year once this budget impasse has ended, and the federal government is back serving our citizens,” Strand said.

The federal government has been partially shut down since late December over an impasse between Democrats and the White House over funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Recently the White House condemned the Democrats after roughly 30 members participated in a Puerto Rico retreat during the shutdown that was organized by Bold PAC, which extends from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
