D.C. man sentenced to nearly 11 years for gun and drug charges

A District man was sentenced Thursday to 10 years and 10 months in prison and four years of supervised release for gun and drug charges, officials said.

Stephen Laroy Jones, 33, was sentenced in federal court in Greenbelt after pleading guilty in October to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.

In March 2010, an officer in Prince George’s County saw Jones not wearing a seatbelt and conducted a traffic stop, according to the plea agreement.

The officer detected a strong marijuana odor in the car, and when he asked Jones whether he had any weapons or illegal contraband, Jones said he had marijuana and a gun in the vehicle, the plea agreement stated.

The officer found a black backpack in the left rear passenger seat, and the backpack contained nearly 14 ounces of marijuana and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol, the plea agreement stated. The officer also found about 1.4 ounces of crack cocaine, a scale and a razor blade in the car, and found $1,773 on Jones.

Jones had previously been convicted of attempted distribution of cocaine in the District in 2004 and was sentenced to 18 months in prison and five years of supervised release, the plea agreement said.
