Robberies cracked via tip line

A tip line helped police solve 10 Fairfax County bank robberies in a year’s time, according to the department.

Most recently, the Crime Solvers line led authorities to a man suspected in three recent robberies. Woodbridge resident Marcos Francisco Pacheco, 46, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly holding up a Wachovia Bank on Richmond Highway twice within a week’s time in late October, as well as a BB&T branch earlier this month.

Crime Solvers, a program used by law enforcement agencies throughout the region, rewards callers for information leading to arrest and indictment while at the same time allowing them to keep their identities undisclosed. The program relies heavily on local media to advertise the tip line.

The use of the tip line is particularly significant because the county is dealing with an unusually intense spate of bank robberies that doesn’t show signs of abating. On Nov. 7, a man robbed a BB&T on Richmond Highway with a handgun and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Crime Solvers can be reached at 866-411-TIPS.
