Black Lives Matter protesters clash with police outside LAPD headquarters and scrawl ‘KKK’ on sign

An estimated 100 Black Lives Matter protesters gathered outside the Los Angeles Police Department, with officers wearing riot gear to disperse the group.

“LAPD in riot gear squaring off a with a group of about 100 BLM protesters in downtown LA in front of LAPD headquarters. There was a vigil for #DaunteWright earlier, and the protesters knocked over LAPD barricades. More LAPD resources responding now,” Fox Los Angeles reporter Bill Melugin tweeted early Thursday morning, accompanied by a video.

Riots and protests have spread in cities across the country following the police shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, on Sunday,

In Los Angeles, police declared an unlawful assembly in the early hours of Thursday, and the crowd was cleared by around 2 a.m., Melugin said.

“KKK has been spray painted onto the LAPD HQ,” Melugin wrote in another tweet, accompanied by a photo.

The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment on the matter and inquiry regarding any arrests made.

Brooklyn Center also saw another night of protests and riots on Wednesday evening, while similar protests in Portland saw rioters setting the Portland Police Association’s headquarters on fire.

The violence follows the death of Wright, 20, in the Minneapolis suburb during a traffic stop.

Police tried to arrest him following the discovery that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Wright was seen struggling with police and attempting to flee in his car.

He had recently failed to appear in court on charges he fled officers in June and was in possession of a gun without a permit, court documents show. He had also previously been charged with first-degree aggravated robbery stemming from a 2019 incident.

The officer who shot Wright, Kim Potter, was charged with second-degree manslaughter and has resigned from the force.
