The father of slain intern Chandra Levy took to the witness stand Tuesday afternoon and refuted statements he gave to law enforcement more than eight years ago when he believed Congressman Gary Condit was responsible for his daughter’s death.
Dr. Robert Levy, 64, said he told police in 2001 and 2002 that his daughter was very cautious and would never go jogging in the woods alone, and that she and Condit had secretly been dating and had a five-year plan to get married. But on Tuesday Levy said he didn’t think those things were true.
“I just said whatever came to mind just to point to him as the villain,” Levy said.
Levy said he was certain Condit was “guilty until we learned about this character here,” pointing to the defendant, Ingmar Guandique.
Levy said he called Condit, a Democrat who represented Levy’s hometown of Modesto, Calif., after he found his daughter’s phone bill which showed numerous calls made to Condit, and Levy complained to the congressman that police were not investigating his 24-year-old daughter’s disappearance with a sense of urgency.
Chandra Levy was last seen in May 2001, and her remains were found in Rock Creek Park a year later.
Guandique, a 29-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, is on trial in D.C. Superior Court for Levy’s death. He’s charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and attempted sexual assault.
