Ted Cruz and Kirsten Gillibrand launch ‘combat COVID-19 challenge’

Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are launching a campaign encouraging the public to help their community during the coronavirus pandemic in a safe manner.

On Monday, Cruz announced his “Combat COVID-19 Challenge” with Gillibrand on social media after delivering breakfast tacos and coffee to the Houston, Texas, Police Officer’s Union, encouraging the public to use personal protective equipment and help their communities.

“Do something that will make a difference in your community to make it through this crisis. Do it in a way that’s safe. Use PPE. Don’t risk anybody’s safety,” Cruz said in a video, challenging others to do the same within 48 hours.

“Help somebody else. And then challenge three more people. We’re going to see if we can get a whole lot of people engaged and making a difference, coming through, fighting this pandemic. And we will beat COVID-19.”

Gillibrand also released a video on social media to debut the campaign, sending pizza from a local restaurant to front-line healthcare workers.

“I just got a call from Ted Cruz, and he asked me to combat COVID-19 with some public service. And I thought ‘what a great idea!'” said Gillibrand.

“Acts of kindness and compassion are more important than ever, especially for essential workers on the front lines of this crisis,” the New York senator wrote in a tweet.
