Many Americans have a friend or family member who has served in the military. Now, American Corporate Partners (ACP), a non-profit that helps returning veterans transition into new post-service careers, is promoting a unique way to honor them. It’s called #GiveThem20. Give them 20 push-ups or sit-ups, that is, to thank them for their service. Then, once you’ve caught your breath, spread the word on social media and nominate two of your friends to do the same.
Organizers suggest the best way to promote the challenge is by filming yourself (no judgment!) doing the challenge and sharing it on social media using the #GiveThem20 hashtag. Be forewarned: Videos are being collected on GiveThem20.org for troops to see everyone saluting them, so make sure the video settings are on public.
But ACP’s work goes further than this. With the help of volunteers, ACP answers job-related questions, reviews resumes, and offers networking advice to veterans through its community, ACP AdvisorNet.
ACP kicked off #GiveThem20 campaign with Jon Stewart last week, who then challenged the New York Mets and John Oliver to do the same:
The Mets and Oliver filmed their responses over the weekend. Many other celebrities, as well as Fortune 500 companies—many of which employ veterans—have committed to participate as well. The Washington Nationals, who were nominated by the Mets, are up next; they are now deciding when and where to meet the challenge.
The initiative is not just limited to push-ups or sit-ups. The Mets did 20 jumping jacks, and others have partaken in other, more creative ways, such as pogo-sticking:
So, what are you waiting for? Drop and #GiveThem20. It’s a great way to share your appreciation for our men and women in uniform.
