The Montgomery County Planning Board is taking up the draft plan for Kensington redevelopment on Thursday and the planning staff is recommending it be shipped off to the county council for their consideration.
From there, the council will schedule more hearings for public comment (which will likely include lots of concerned statements from longtime residents who are worried the quiet burg will get overdeveloped). Supporters of a revised town center plan however, note that, as Kensington’s population ages, folks will want to move into smaller living spaces like apartments and condos.
Can you think of any prominent apartment or condo communities in Kensington? Yeah, we can’t either. That’s why the new plan includes several opportunities for mixed-use development — all the rage these days in the planning community — of apartment buildings with space for ground floor retail.
Thursday’s planing board meeting will start later than usual, running from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., because of conflicts with board member schedules.
