Democrats consume more media than Republicans, most of it online

Democrats spend more time consuming media than Republicans do on average, according to a new study.

A new survey from Safehome.org finds Democrats spend an average of more than 9 hours each week logged into social media, over 5 hours reading news, and 4.4 hours watching news. Comparatively, Republicans spend 8 hours on social media, just over 4 reading news, and 4.1 hours watching news.

Combined with Green Party voters and independents, most people spend more time on social media than they do watching or reading the news. However, social media and blogs were found to be the least trusted news sources, according to the survey. More people considered comedy news shows to be more trustworthy than news found on their Twitter or Facebook feeds.

The survey found news websites were viewed as more trustworthy than radio and television news broadcasts. Republicans and Democrats both find newspapers to be one of the most credible news sources, while Democrats were slightly more trusting of online outlets, comedy news shows, and radio.

Pew Research found a similar trend in 2010, except with Republicans consuming more media than Democrats under Obama’s presidency.
