Military agency looks to Maryland for new recruits

A key military agency is actively recruiting Marylanders to fill anticipated openings when it moves to Fort Meade in three years.

“There will be quite a rich talent pool in Maryland for us to choose from,” said James Campbell, spokesman for the Defense Information Systems Agency, which provides information technology to the military and the Department of Homeland Security.

DISA, the largest agency moving to Fort Meade as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, learned in its annual survey that more of its employees are choosing to stay with the agency after it moves.

“Three years ago, 52 percent of our employees said, ?No, we won?t go.? Now that?s down to 20 percent, and that?s extremely encouraging,” said Jack Penkose, director of personnel for DISA in Arlington, Va.

To fill the vacant positions resulting from employees unwilling to stay, DISA is working on recruiting graduates from Maryland?s colleges and universities, officials said.

DISA officials said the agency was striving to retain its employees by allowing them to tele-work up to three days a week.

The agency?s move to Fort Meade has attracted job candidates.

However, workers moving from Fort Monmouth, N.J., to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford as part of the BRAC process have opposed the move to Maryland.
