Julia Child Restaurant Week, through Aug. 15
According to Ris Lacoste, when the chef told Julia Child that she planned on opening her own restaurant one day, Child responded, “You are going to serve meatloaf at your restaurant, aren’t you?”
Not only is meatloaf a feature on Lacoste’s eponymous West End restaurant Ris, it is also a highlight on her special menu celebrating Julia Child’s centennial birthday.
Were Child still with us, she would celebrate her 100th birthday Aug. 15. In recognition, restaurants across the country are celebrating with Julia Child Restaurant Week. Ris is offering a special Julia Child lunch menu throughout the month and Julia Child-inspired selections during D.C. Summer Restaurant Week Aug. 13-19.
Child played the role of mentor and friend to Lacoste. She first met Child while studying in France in 1982, and over time established a close relationship. Lacoste even cooked at Child’s 90th birthday celebration.
“She was a very important person in my life,” Lacoste said. She added that she aspires to emulate Child’s hospitality, kindness and ability to rise above the fray.
When Cafe Dupont chef David Fritsche came to the U.S. from Switzerland in 2006, he realized Child’s popularity and influence in the States just by visiting a bookstore.
“Once I got here I definitely saw the books,” Fritsche said.
For the Julia Child celebration, Fritsche has put together a three-course meal featuring a chicken liver parfait, orange-glazed duck breast and peach tarte.
Fritsche said Child established a legacy by bringing French cooking to the States.
“She’s a very famous person in the U.S. because she introduced French cuisine in the U.S.,” he said.
Lacoste said that Child made cooking accessible and exuded a passion to the kitchen.
“She brought a love of cooking to life,” Lacoste said. “She gave us that true joy of cooking.”
