House Democrats are planning to lay out articles of impeachment against President Trump on Tuesday morning, according to reports.
Leaving a Monday evening meeting in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, New York Rep. Eliot Engel told reporters that an announcement on the impeachment process would be coming the following morning. Several Democratic sources have told news outlets that the party is expected to unveil its articles of impeachment at that time.
Engel, however, would not say how many articles would be listed and would not detail their substance, including whether any information from special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on the investigation into alleged collusion between the president’s 2016 campaign and Russia would be mentioned. In it, Mueller laid out 10 possible instances of obstruction of justice by the president but ruled out election interference collusion.
“There will be some announcements tomorrow morning,” the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said. “This is not a happy day, but I think we are doing what we have to do.”
The Tuesday announcement will come one day after a contentious public impeachment hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. According to the Hill, the markup on the articles is likely to take place on Wednesday or Thursday.
Rep. David Cicilline told reporters on Monday that Democrats will “work through the night” to determine the exact articles they will introduce and will reconvene at about 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. They are reportedly planning to move forward with two articles against President Trump, including abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and are still considering a third article of obstruction of justice.
“Our staff has been working on this for quite a period of time,” Cicilline said.
Pelosi will lead the charge on deciding which articles to draft, including whether they will focus on the Ukraine scandal or more broadly on both that and Mueller’s findings. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler refused to comment as he left the meeting in the speaker’s office. He and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff are expected to lead the press conference, which is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.
