STORYLINE
Mexico celebrated tonight its 204th anniversary of independence from Spain. President Enrique Pena Nieto, in front of thousands of Mexicans gathered at the central square of the capital, known as El Zocalo, claimed: “Long live the heroes that gave us our nation and freedom!, Long live this nation that embrace us! Long live Mexico!”.
After the claim, Pena Nieto rang a bell three times and an impressive display of fireworks began, to mark the beginning of the festivities.
The celebration commemorates the insurgency of the Mexican people in 1810, to the Spanish domination, led by Miguel Hidalgo, which marked the beginning of the Mexican independence war, which lasted until 1821.
