The $787 billion federal stimulus package has generated more than $1 billion for Virginia’s highways, transit, water projects and other infrastructure, Gov. Tim Kaine said Monday.
The funds include $123 million for highway safety and construction, $116 million for bridge repair and $114 million for pavement upgrades and restoration.
The investment is part of the total $4.8 billion Virginia is expected to receive through the stimulus, according to Kaine.
Among the big-ticket items on the list: the stimulus is funding $60 million for the last phases of the Fairfax County Parkway extension, which will complete the final two miles of the highway through Fort Belvoir’s Engineer Proving Ground. Northern Virginia’s share also includes $5.8 million for pavement projects in Prince William County and $4.4 million in Loudoun County. Metro is receiving $184 million from the stimulus.
“The projects will pay long-term dividends to all of us, in the form of improved bridges and highways, railways and other transit, sewage treatment and drinking water,” Kaine said.
