Uber charges passenger jaw-dropping fare after driver gets stuck on I-95 due to snow

Uber is apologizing after charging a passenger $600 when his driver was delayed for hours on Interstate 95 during a recent snowstorm.

Hundreds of vehicles were trapped on a section of the highway in Virginia on Monday. Andrew Peters, of Richmond, was returning from San Francisco when he took an Uber from Dulles International Airport and got stuck on the highway on the way home.

It took Peters nine hours to finally get home, ABC 7 News reported. “It was kind of scary,” Peters said. “We didn’t have any food or water.”

He initially paid a $200 fare but then said Uber tacked on an additional $400.

Uber issued a statement saying that Peters would be refunded the additional $400 charge.

“We have refunded Mr. Peters after this terrible ordeal and are so glad that he and his Uber driver got home safely,” according to the statement, which added that the driver’s pay will not be affected by the refund.

Uber warned on their website that “heavy traffic may cause your trip to take longer than expected and to compensate your driver for the additional time, your fare may change.”

The I-95 stretch reopened Tuesday evening after accident wreckage blocking the roadway was cleared.
