Rep. Devin Nunes said “old, pervy” Democrats asked Hope Hicks about her love life during a closed-door deposition on Wednesday.
The interview, conducted by the Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee, was meant to focus on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible obstruction by President Trump and his associates.
But Nunes, who is not a member of the panel, said his sources in the room told him that Democrats appeared to stray from that topic.
“Nobody quite understood why she was back in the U.S. Capitol yesterday doing essentially another deposition,” the California Republican told Fox News on Thursday, referring to how Hicks has already done interviews with Mueller and congressional panels.
“My sources that were inside and did the interviewing said it was quite embarrassing to watch the Democratic congressmen essentially ask Hope Hicks about her love life,” Nunes added. “I think that’s very bizarre to have a bunch of old, pervy congressmen asking somebody who has no new information about her love life. I think the American people would be ashamed if they knew what actually happened in that room.”
Democrats came out of that deposition complaining about Hicks’ refusal to answer their questions while Republicans called it a “political stunt” and Trump said Hicks was put through “hell.”
The White House asserted executive privilege over any information Hicks, the former White House director of communications, might have been asked to give related to her work in the Trump administration. Hicks, 30, left the White House in March 2018 and joined Fox Corporation as its chief communications officer.
There have been multiple reports out over the years about Hicks’ dating life, including that she was going out with former White House staff secretary Rob Porter, who resigned in February 2018 following allegations that he abused his two ex-wives.
The transcript of Hicks’ deposition is expected to be released by Friday.
