Brown not planning hearings on DCPS cheating allegations

D.C. City Council Chairman Kwame Brown does not have plans to hold hearings on allegations of cheating on standardized tests, despite what he may have told reporters Tuesday night.

“The chairman is comfortable the answers will be forthcoming as a result of DCPS’s requested investigation,” spokeswoman Karen Sibert said.

Acting Chancellor Kaya Henderson asked the city’s inspector general to investigate charges of cheating on the D.C. Comprehensive Assessment System following a USA Today article that sparked supicion over the rapid gains some schools have showed in the last few years. At some schools, these performance peaks coincides with a suspicious pattern of erasures that results in far more correct answers than chance.

The Washington Post quoted Brown in a Wednesday story saying he wanted to hold hearings and subpoena school officials.

Sibert said Wednesday afternoon that Brown was scheduled to meet with Henderson later that day, where they would discuss the exams, but he does not have plans to hold any hearings.
