Interior secretary named designated survivor for Trump’s State of the Union address

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt was named as the designated survivor for President Trump’s State of the Union address.

Bernhardt, the 53rd secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, will not be in attendance for the president’s speech on Tuesday night in order to assume power in the event of a disaster.

Then-Energy Secretary Rick Perry was the designated survivor for Trump’s address to the two chambers of Congress last year.

Trump’s State of the Union address comes as he’s standing trial in the Senate for impeachment charges passed by the House in December. A White House adviser revealed that the president would not address his impeachment during his speech.
