Illinois officials are investigating a small bomb that was exploded in the women’s bathroom at a Target store in Evanston Wednesday to see if it is connected to the company’s transgender bathroom policy.
No one was in the bathroom or injured when the small bomb went off around 4 p.m. Central time, Commander Joe Dugan said, according to a local report.
The bomb was made with a plastic bottle and did not contain any projectiles like nails or tacks, according to authorities. It caused only minor damage to the bathroom.
Target announced that any store customer could use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, a response to the North Carolina law mandating individuals use the bathroom that matches their birth gender and the subsequent backlash over it.
Target’s new policy states that transgender shoppers and staff can “use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”
In response to the company’s recently-implemented policy, more than 1.3 million people signed an online petition promising to boycott Target.
