A teenager who beat and hospitalized a veteran Baltimore Sun reporter was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison.
Baltimore Circuit Judge Martin Welch sentenced Philip Carter, 19, of North Bruce Street. He pleaded guilty Nov. 27 to robbery and first-degree assault.
On Feb. 25, 2006, Carter assaulted and robbed Baltimore Sun reporter Carl Schoettler, 74, in downtown Baltimore, prosecutors said.
Schoettler was in the 200 block of East Fayette Street when he became involved in a minor traffic accident with Gregory Kulla, 36.
As both men exited their vehicles to assess the damage, Carter and Latar Bradshaw, 23, walked across the street, prosecutors said.
Carter punched Schoettler in the head, causing him to fall to the ground unconscious — then Carter kicked Schoettler in the body and head about 10 times, prosecutors said.
Carter then took at least $100 from Schoettler?s pockets, according to police.
Schoettler was hospitalized for nine days with “severe head injuries,” police said.
The trial of the two other men charged in the attack, Kulla and Bradshaw, is scheduled for May 23.
