Nikki Haley on proposed Russia cybersecurity partnership: ‘You keep those that you don’t trust closer’

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the U.S. needs “to get together with Russia” to cooperate on cybersecurity.

“We need to tell them what we think should happen, shouldn’t happen and if we talk to them about it, hopefully, we can cut this out and get them to stop,” Haley told CNN’s “State of the Union” in an interview that aired Sunday.

But, she added, that doesn’t mean the U.S. lets Russia off the hook after it interfered in the 2016 elections.

“It doesn’t mean we ever take our eyes off the ball. It doesn’t mean we ever trust Russia. We can’t trust Russia and we won’t ever trust Russia. But you keep those that you don’t trust closer so that you can always keep an eye on them and keep them in check,” Haley said.

In tweets Sunday, President Trump said the U.S. and Russia plan to work together on cybersecurity so that “election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded and safe.”
