Late night comedian Stephen Colbert criticized the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict on Monday night.
The host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS said he is not a legal expert but opined that if the teenager “didn’t break the law, we should change the law.” The suggestion was met with applause from his audience.
A Wisconsin jury on Friday found the now-18-year-old not guilty on all charges related to the fatal shootings of two men and injuring another during a riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last year. Rittenhouse argued the shootings were in self-defense.
“So Rittenhouse was found ‘not guilty,’ but only a complete moron would celebrate this clear tragedy by making this guy a hero,” Colbert added.

Colbert said the Rittenhouse verdict would be like if etiquette writer Emily Post said it would be proper to “go to Thanksgiving, drop trou, and leave your a** print in the pumpkin pie.”
Colbert said he would react to that hypothetical situation by saying, “OK, not illegal, but the system is clearly broken.”

Colbert’s remarks did not sit well with some conservatives, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
“Rich Democrats believe you have no right to defend yourself from an angry mob,” Cruz tweeted. “He was being violently attacked by three dangerous felons; a jury of his peers found that Kyle Rittenhouse acted in self-defense. What Colbert is arguing is to outlaw the ability to defend oneself.”

Stephen Colbert has decided that if #KyleRittenhouse didn’t break the law, we should change the law? How so? If someone attacks you, chases you down, threatens to kill you, grabs your firearm, beats you with a skateboard or points a gun at you, we shouldn’t be able to defend?
