Storm leaves thousands in D.C. area powerless

Although the massive winter storm that has dumped huge amounts of snow and ice across the nation didn’t amount to much here, thousands of people around Washington still lost power.

Northern Virginia was hit the hardest, with Dominion Power reporting 2,535 customers in the area without electricity. In the Maryland suburbs, Pepco reported about 200 power outages at 8:30 a.m., most of them in Montgomery County.

In D.C., the Department of Transportation said the southbound Interstate 295 underpass at Malcolm X Avenue was closed due to high standing water, and urged drivers to avoid the area.

But things are looking up for Wednesday afternoon. Although rain showers are likely in the morning, it is expected to warm up with highs in the mid-50s, according to the National Weather Service.
