Gov. Gavin Newsom said the first Californian to be infected with coronavirus though community spread was in a nail salon.
The Democrat used the point to defend his position on keeping personal services such as nail salons closed, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“This whole thing started in the state of California, the first community spread, in a nail salon,” Newsom said. “I just want to remind everybody of that and that I’m very worried about that.”
Hygiene upkeep has been standard practice at most nail salons even before the virus’s outbreak. Some states have slowly begun to open personal services, but California has remained strict on its reopening.
Because of the high rate of cases and the state’s success in working toward flattening the curve, Newsom said he remains cautious about reopening as other states have begun doing.
Parts of California have been a hotbed for the virus. The state has seen nearly 61,000 cases and more than 2,500 related deaths.
