Marine dies after military training accident in Australia

A U.S. Marine has died from injuries suffered from a training accident in Australia.

Lance Cpl. Hans Sandoval-Pereyra, 21, died Wednesday at a hospital in Darwin, Australia, where he was being treated for wounds suffered from a tactical vehicle accident over Memorial Day weekend.

The Fairfax, Va., resident was an expeditionary airfield systems technician and had received the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. One other Marine received minor injuries in the Humvee rollover, which is under investigation.

Col. Russ Boyce, commanding officer for Marine Rotational Force – Darwin, noted the loss of Sandoval-Pereyra.

“He was a beloved member of our community and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends,” Boyce said. “We are extremely grateful to our Australian partners for their valiant efforts to save this young Marine’s life.”

About 2,500 Marines are currently deployed in Darwin, which is the capital of the Northern Territory in Australia. Sandoval-Pereyra is the third Marine to die from the rollover of a military vehicle in recent weeks.
