David Ortiz, the legendary Boston baseball slugger,
is in stable condition after being
shot Sunday night in the Dominican Republic
.
.
The 43-year-old was shot in the back in his home country at nearly point-blank rage, authorities said.
Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo on Sunday evening when a man got off his motorcycle and approached him from behind and shot him, police said. He underwent surgery and his condition is stable, Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said.
Bautista said the alleged gunman was beaten by a crowd of people at the bar and police plan on questioning him once he has received treatment for his injuries.
It’s not clear whether Ortiz was targeted.
Ortiz’s father, Leo Ortiz
, said none of the former baseball player’s organs were harmed by the bullet.
“Big Papi will be around for a long time,” he said.
Ortiz retired from baseball in 2016.
“We have offered David’s family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts,” the Boston Red Sox said in a statement.
