House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers said Saturday that the tragic Orlando, Fla., shooting is just one more reason for Americans to worry about their safety and security, and said the House GOP’s “Better Way” initiative is a way to participate in and improve the federal government’s approach to national security and other issues.
“Our goal is to reaffirm that government by the people, speaking through their elected representatives, is the best way to keep us free and safe, protect our liberty and make sure the promise of America exists for the next generation,” she said in the GOP’s weekly radio address.
In addition to national security, the GOP initiative focuses on the Constitution, poverty, the economy, tax reform and healthcare.
She said Republicans are looking to do a better job listening to the voters on these issues. “We’re anxious because your voices are not being heard in Congress,” she said.
“And even as we grieve together as a nation, we must remain vigilant to protect the promise of America,” McMorris Rodgers added. “Because in America, we trust people to make the best decisions for themselves. Not a government that decides for you.”
The congresswoman told voters “speaking through their elected representatives, is the best way to keep us free and safe.”
“Restoring the people’s voice in Congress is not just one part of our Better Way agenda, it’s the most important part,” McMorris Rodgers finished. “Unless people are back in the driver’s seat, we won’t be able to rebuild our military, roll back the red tape or help our most vulnerable.”
