Kevin McCarthy super PAC amasses $61 million war chest

The super PAC aligned with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy entered 2022 with $61.2 million in the bank to spend on sinking the Democratic Party’s thin, five-seat majority.

The Congressional Leadership Fund boasted record fundraising for an off year, announcing Wednesday that a haul of $65.5 million in 2021 enabled the super PAC to more than double the $28 million war chest it amassed in 2019. But the $61.2 million in cash on hand reported by the Congressional Leadership Fund is being bolstered by additional resources from the American Action Network, a political nonprofit organization affiliated with McCarthy’s super PAC.

American Action Network raised nearly $49 million last year, bringing the total raised between the two organizations in 2021 to $110 million.

“CLF heads into 2022 with the beginnings of a war chest and firepower to expand the battlefield deep into Democrat territory and win the majority for Republicans,” Dan Conston, president of Congressional Leadership Fund, said in a statement.

In 2019, the Congressional Leadership Fund raised $32 million. The American Action Network declined to reveal how much money it had in the bank at the outset of this election year. But implied in the decision to highlight how much the group raised is the suggestion that it plans to spend tens of millions of dollars, already amassed, to help the Republicans regain the House majority.

The Democrats are clinging to a five-seat advantage. Historically, the party in power in the White House sheds more seats than that in midterm elections. McCarthy is in line to be elected speaker if the GOP wins control of Congress.
