Asian father of two attacked, called racial slur in New York City

An Asian father was assaulted in New York City in front of his two young children over the weekend, according to law enforcement.

At around 8 p.m. on Saturday, an unidentified person punched the 33-year-old victim in the face and called him a “dumb f—ing ch–k,” before leaving the scene in a vehicle, police said, according to the New York Post.

The victim of the attack was reportedly driving with his children in lower Manhattan when he stopped his car to care for his son, who had become sick.

The perpetrator then got out of his car, walked up to the victim, yelled the slur, and told him to move his car. The perpetrator also punched the window of the victim’s vehicle and the victim himself before returning to his car and driving away, police said.

The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

Saturday’s attack adds to numerous recent crimes against Asians and Asian Americans around the country, including in New York City. In late March, a black man was arrested by New York City police and charged with hate crimes for assaulting an elderly Asian woman.

On Sunday, a white California man was arrested, having been accused of assaulting a Korean American couple and threatening a Japanese American Olympic athlete.

Last week, the U.S. Senate moved to address the nationwide string of anti-Asian hate incidents, voting on April 14 to move forward with debate on legislation that seeks to improve hate crime reporting. The measure has received bipartisan support, including from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
