Casey DeSantis slams Democratic lieutenant governor hopeful for ‘disgusting’ joke

Florida first lady Casey DeSantis did not hold back when criticizing Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist’s running mate for a “disgusting” joke at the expense of special needs children.

Karla Hernandez-Mats, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, was caught on video Tuesday claiming that her experience as a teacher of special needs children who are “emotionally handicapped” puts her in a good position to “deal with the dysfunctional legislature.”

“As a mom, I am disgusted and sickened by the callous, insensitive, and ignorant comments by someone who claims to be an advocate for children,” DeSantis said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Karla, saying that children with unique abilities are ‘dysfunctional’ and equating them to your political opponents is beyond a new low.”

“As first lady, I will make it my mission to let all parents across this state know of the ‘hate in your heart.’ Shame on you, just shame on you,” she continued.
