Sounds of relaxation

Instead of listening to horns blaring during rush hour traffic Friday, listen to the relaxing sounds of ensemble L?Armonia de Cieli.

The ensemble consists of Andrew Arceci on viola da gamba, John Armato on lute, Ed Greenhood on lute and renaissance guitar, Bryce Peltier on recorders and soprano vocalist Julia Steinbok.

L?Armonia de Cieli formed a few months ago.

“We all performed in the Peabody Renaissance Ensemble together, so we decided to join forces,” Armato said. “We are hoping to take this Old World music and bring it to a bigger public.”

They will perform as part of the Peabody at Homewood: Music at the Museum concert series.

The series began as an after-work program for Friday evenings in the spring. “The idea was rather than fleeing town immediately after work, or getting into rush hour traffic, that one could come back here and relax,” said Judith Proffitt, program coordinator at Homewood House Museum. “I like to think that people are seeing performers whom they may see next at Carnegie Hall or some huge venue like that.”

Armato said the group, which specializes in baroque and Renaissance music, will perform a set of English and Italian instrumental and vocal songs.

“We all really love the music,” Armato said. “Our biggest goal is to share our enjoyment with as many people as we can reach.”

The performance will take place in the reception hall at Homewood, which Proffitt said is one of the most formal entertaining rooms in the house. “It would have been used for small dances and musical or acting groups that may have come through,” she said. “The audience will find the space very intimate. It?s a great opportunity to just soak in the ambiance of this beautiful room.”

Proffitt said she is excited to hear L?Armonia de Ciele perform. “I understand they are quite exceptional,” she said.

“There?s a lot of really great repertoire in [our performance], and the best part is that you don?t have to be musically trained to understand the music,” Armato said.

The performance will be followed by a wine reception in the Homewood wine cellar. The final concert will be May 4 and feature violinist Sonya Chung.
