Tanker theft suspect arrested

Acting on an anonymous tip, police Wednesday night arrested a 42-year-old Prince George?s County man, charging him with last Friday?s armed robbery of a fuel tanker truck in South Baltimore.

Willie Orlando McKinnon, of Hyattsville, is charged with armed robbery, carjacking and various weapons charges in connection with the theft that raised fears of terrorism up and down the East Coast.

He was arrested after 6 p.m. at the home of another person in Hyattsville. In his possession at the time of his arrest was a .45 caliber handgun, according to city police spokesman Sterling Clifford.

Police recovered the truck Friday at in Washington, D.C. after it was stolen at gunpoint from a fueling station in South Baltimore.

The truck, loaded with 7,100 gallons of diesel fuel when it was stolen, turned up unoccupied in a Southeast Washington about 1 p.m., authorities said.

The discovery came eight hours after a man brandishing a semi-automatic weapon forced the driver from the truck at a Curtis Bay fueling station, then fled toward Interstate 95, police said.

The truck, owned by Baltimore Tank Lines of Glen Burnie Inc., had stopped at the fueling station in the 3100 block of Vera Road. Its driver was not injured.

Police said they have ruled out terrorism as a motive for the crime, but are continuing to investigate the incident.

“There is absolutely no connection to terrorism,” Clifford said.
