Former Republican Rep. Greg Walden joins board of clean energy group

Former Republican Rep. Greg Walden, who retired in January, has joined the advisory board of the conservative clean energy group ClearPath.

Walden was the top Republican of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he encouraged his party to work toward addressing climate change and curbing emissions.

By joining ClearPath, Walden, 64, is signaling he intends to focus his post-Congress work on promoting an agenda to confront climate change focused on spurring innovation of clean energy technologies. In an interview before he retired, Walden said he intended to contrast his proposals with more comprehensive policies such as carbon pricing or a clean electricity standard that Democrats say are needed to avert the worst consequences of climate change.

“ClearPath has consistently provided policymakers with responsible and achievable solutions to reduce emissions, advance innovation in energy, and develop better manufacturing practices that will keep America in the lead,” Walden said. “Growing jobs and innovation here, with a focus on reducing emissions, makes sense to everyone.”

Walden, the former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the GOP campaign arm, represented Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District from 1999 until last month.

He is the second high-profile former public official to join the board of ClearPath recently. The group is a nonprofit organization that seeks to advance policies that accelerate innovations that reduce emissions in the energy and industrial sectors.
