Pedestrian killed by SUV in District Heights

A man was killed in District Heights on Friday morning while attempting to cross Pennsylvania Avenue, Prince George’s County police said.

The man, who has not been identified, was crossing the eastbound side of Pennsylvania Avenue when he was stuck by a sports utility vehicle and died. The accident closed the street down for several hours while police reconstructed the scene. –Freeman Klopott

Animal shelter owners hit with 28 cruelty charges each

Police in Prince William County have charged the owners of a Manassas animal shelter with 28 counts of animal cruelty each, following a two-month investigation into the poor treatment of rescued dogs.

More than 100 dogs were seized in early May after police searched the Assisi’s Animal Rescue Foundation, which adopted unwanted dogs and cats.

Authorities responding to a complaint found floors in the facility covered in animal urine and feces, empty food and water bowls, and dog carcasses buried on the premises,according to Prince William County police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez.

The owners, 44-year-old Sandra Cortes and 30-year-old Brenda Dodson, each faces up to 28 years in prison and $70,000 fines if convicted on all counts. They were taken into custody Tuesday, and have since been released on bail.

Hernandez said most of the pets have been adopted, and some have been euthanized. – Eric Roper

Gaithersburg man, 80, dies of injuries from crash

John Langford Eubank, 80, of Gaithersburg, died Thursday of injuries from a Gaithersburg car crash, Montgomery County police said. Around 1:12 p.m., Marco A. Ekonomo Martinez, 25, of Germantown  was turning from Midcounty Highway onto Woodfield Road in his Ford Ranger when he collided with Eubank’s Honda Accord, which was heading west on Midcounty Highway. No charges have been filed.
