Feinstein Disowns Trump for Appearing to Support Her Cause

Given the hyper-partisan era in which we live, one would expect a Democrat to cheer when the presumptive Republican nominee for president appeared open to legislation she was championing.

But that isn’t what happened when Donald Trump tweeted about a proposal, championed by California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, which would ban gun sales to people on the terror watch list.

The New York Times article on the subject contains the following astonishing passage:

Democrats were not counting on Mr. Trump’s support and almost seemed not to want it. They have been more than happy to associate him with the N.R.A., which Democrats view as the biggest obstacle to gun control. Republicans are under pressure to show some action in response to the Orlando shooting, and Mr. Cornyn said on Wednesday evening that he was working with Ms. Feinstein on a potential compromise. But Ms. Feinstein, speaking to reporters after a classified briefing on the Orlando shooting that Mr. Cornyn also attended, said she doubted a deal would be reached. As for Mr. Trump’s role, she was dismissive. “Oh, Trump just makes everything worse,” Ms. Feinstein said.

There are only two logical conclusions one can draw from Senator Feinstein’s sentiments.

The first possibility is that Senator Feinstein doesn’t actually believe that her bill will save any lives, but rather wants to use it as a cudgel to hammer her partisan opponents. The second option is that she does think her bill will make America safer—but simply views beating Republicans as a higher priority. Trump went and mucked that up, however.

Neither possibility speaks well for Senator Feinstein—nor, again, for that ultra-partisan era in which we find ourselves.
