WATCH: Cruz says Biden ‘got us in this mess’ because he’s ‘scared of Putin’

Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz accused President Joe Biden on Thursday of initiating Russia’s invasion of Ukraine because the president didn’t “stand up to” Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“What got us in this mess is Biden is scared of Putin,” Cruz said. “He’s scared to stand up to Putin.”

“I was the one who authored the sanctions that shut Nord Stream down,” the Texas lawmaker told Fox News. “Four days after Biden takes the oath of office, Putin resumes deep-sea construction of Nord Stream 2. A few months later, Biden waives the sanctions on Russia and Putin [and] gives him the green light to build the pipeline. That is why this invasion happened, and it didn’t have to happen.”

Putin wouldn’t need the pipelines in Ukraine after his own pipeline was finished, according to Cruz. The senator suggested that the United States could step up and provide the gas needed by Europe and added that the Putin “is laughing at the White House.”

“The war is going much worse for Putin than he anticipated,” Cruz said, noting the massive losses sustained by Russian forces. “The Biden administration needs to do much more to support the Ukrainian people.”
