Support for Donald Trump has plunged after weeks of turmoil and controversy surrounding his campaign, according to a new ABC/Washington Post poll.
The poll finds Trump trailing Hillary Clinton 51-39 percent after leading her by 2 points last month. The results suggest that Trump’s unorthodox, polarizing style may not work as well in the general election as it did in the GOP primaries.
Trump fired his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, last week and incurred reams of criticism two weeks ago for attacking the judge in the Trump University case over his Mexican heritage.
“Roughly two in three Americans say they think Trump is unqualified to lead the nation; are anxious about the idea of him as president; believe his comments about women, minorities and Muslims show an unfair bias; and see his attacks on a federal judge because of his Mexican-American heritage as racist,” the Post reported.
“Fifty-six percent of the public at large say the celebrity business mogul stands against their beliefs, while 64 percent say he does not have the necessary credentials to be president. Fifty-six percent feel strongly that he is unqualified.”
Nevertheless, the poll is only a single snapshot. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll also out today shows Trump losing only 2 points to Clinton from a previous poll and down by just 5 points, 46-41 percent.
Trump Sunday tweeted that the ABC poll was unfair, charging it surveyed too many Democrats.
