Former Florida Republican Rep. Allen West was spotted leaving Trump Tower in Manhattan on Monday afternoon following a meeting with Vice President-elect Mike Pence and other transition team members.
The retired Army lieutenant colonel told members of the press he also spoke with Michael Flynn, Trump’s national security adviser, and K.T. McFarland, the president-elect’s deputy national security adviser. That indicates West may be under consideration for a national security position and not a military one.
“We talked about some national security issues, and you know how maybe I can continue to serve my country,” West said in the Trump Tower lobby. “Nothing was offered. I mean, they know my reputation very well. I’m just a simple soldier and I’m the third of four generations that served this country going back to my father in World War II, and we still have a relative of ours that is continuing to serve in the Army now.”
West said he would be supportive of whoever Trump chooses to serve as the country’s top diplomat.
“He can choose whoever he wants for secretary of state,” West said. “I’m just considering how I can best serve this country.”
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton are believed to be under consideration for the position.
