Self-help author Marianne Williamson defended her support of slave reparations by arguing Americans owe descendants of slaves trillions of dollars and should pay at least $100 billion to make amends.
“What makes me qualified to say $200 to $500 billion dollars? I’ll tell you what makes me qualified,” Williamson, 67, said. “If you did the math of the 40 acres and a mule, given that there was 4 to 5 million slaves at the end of the Civil War, and they were all promised 40 acres and a mule for every family of four, if you did the math today, it would be trillions of dollars. And I believe that anything less than $100 billion dollars is an insult and I believe that $200 to $500 billion is politically feasible today because so many Americans realize there is an injustice that continues to form a toxicity underneath the surface, an emotional turbulence that only reparations will cure.”
The audience met the author’s defense of reparations with loud applause.

Earlier this month, a video of Williamson asking white people to apologize to black people went viral on the internet.
“On behalf of myself, and on behalf of my country, to you and all African Americans, from the beginning of our nation’s history, in honor of your ancestors and for the sake of your children, please hear this from my heart …” Williamson’s prayer of apology began. “I apologize, please forgive us.”
